LG N2B1DD2 Home NAS

The one great thing about technology, you know it’s only going to get cheaper. Just a couple years ago, an entry level NAS would have cost 5k plus. Today a home user can purchase an entry level NAS for $500! The LG N2B1DD2 has 2-terabytes of storage, a built in Blu-ray recorder for off-line archival and hot swappable drives. The unit is accessed through an internet browser making it compatible on Windows, MAC and Unix/Linux OS’s. For 500 bucks, it doesn’t have all the features you’d fine in a DISC Blu-safe, but for the home user, the LG N2B1DD2 has all the features required to back up your pictures and home movies.

Pioneer BDP-V6000 Professional Blu-Ray Player

Pioneer has finally released a pro-AV grade Blu-ray player, the Pioneer BDP-V6000. For those looking for a fully-controllable (RS-232C) Blu-ray player that has the quality and feature sets required to be used in a post production enviornemnt, Pioneer has FINALLY awnsered your calls. While there isn’t anything revolutionary about this deck, it covers the basics, it’s rack mountable, RS-232 control port,  24, 25 or 30 FPS playback in NTSC or PAL.

Toshiba’s BDX2000 Blu-ray Player Hits Shelves

The HD-DVD or die company is back with a blu-ray player, the Toshiba BDX2000 Blu-ray Disc Player. We all new it was going to happen, it had to. Toshiba has finally released thier Blu-ray player, the BDX2000 for a retail price of $199!

It features a 1080p resolution and is BD Live capable. The BDX2000 decodes Dobly True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and features 7.1 channel audio output through HDMI. There aren’t any streaming services to speak of, just what looks to be a pretty good Blu-ray player.

Samsug BD-P3600 Blu-ray Disc Player Review (Part I)

The Samsug BD-P3600 is a unique product. It’s a blu-ray player and streams Netflix, Pandora, YouTube and BD Live 2.0. Just with cutting edge technology, things aren’t always perfect at first. Before purchasing a BD-P3600 I read all the reviews – and they ranged wildly. So were all these “issues” really problems, or just people that expect everything to work flawless when a company releases a trail blazing product?

After unpacking and hooking it up, I pulled a random disc out of my collection, South Park Season 12. Guess what, it didn’t play. Instead of running to the internet to blog just how crappy it was, I preformed the firmware update, which is the first thing is says to do in the start guide and inside almost any BD disc you buy. Problem solved. Many people talked about how long it took and how it cripples the player. Yes, you can’t do anything else, but I don’t think 2 minutes is unreasonable to download new firmware, re-flash it and then reboot the system.

One of the primary reasons I purchased this unit was to stream Netflix. I was a little put off by the process, all movies must be added your queue ahead of time and the order can’t be changed from the BD-P3600. Set that aside, it was easy to setup and watch movies. The quality isn’t quite SD, let alone HD. It is suitable for watching a movie on a 37” TV from 10 feet away. I definitely would get the disc if you’re going to watch the latest James Bond flick on a 65” big screen.

I haven’t used Pandora, no real need considering every other device plays music now-in-days. But alas, I will test in soon and provide feedback on Pandora, BD Live and media streaming from a PC!
